Cycling Coop-to-Coop in Laguna Beach The 1st Annual Laguna Beach Tour de Coop, which took place last Sunday, November 3, 2013, brought together chicken lovers and cyclists to embrace the chicken coops of Laguna Beach. More than 50 cyclists attended the coop-to-coop self-guided bike tour to learn all about keeping backyard chickens and their care during the community bike ride. Liesa Schimmelpfennig, President of SEEDS Arts and Education, the event sponsor, said, "There were wonderful conversations that grew while gathering at the chicken coops...love of the town, health and wellness, eating cruelty free. People got a lot out of just talking to each other." There were three "Coop Loops" on the nearly 20-mile tour: Laguna Canyon, Bluebird Canyon and the Village. With more than a dozen coops to visit, attendees were able to see many different types of coops and a wide variety of chickens. The tour started at Anneliese Schools' Willowbrook Campus in Laguna Canyon where guests received their tour maps, a light breakfast and were treated to a lecture from the school's chicken caretaker, Helia Buyck followed by a walk-through of the coop that is home to about 55 chickens, not to mention peacocks, swans, doves, and pigeons. The tour also included a late check-in at a residence in the village for those who didn't want to make the trek out to the canyon. Along the route, "coopsters" opened their homes, shared their knowledge (and sometimes food), and inspired others to raise backyard chickens. Reem Khalil and Kerry Bowers, the visionaries of the event, were thrilled at the turnout and impressed with how the community came together in support of it. 'I loved seeing so many different, like-minded people that didn't know each other before, come together. It was a community within a community,' Reem Khalil. 'It was great to see our town live a sustainable lifestyle for a day and get to know each other.'
