Building an inexpensive but awesome chicken coop- Celtic Buddhist style. Celtic Buddhism is a do-it-yourself type religion, in that we don't call in a "professional" to tell us how to live spiritually. We know we can and in fact must make this journey ourselves. The people of Bangor and northern Maine are also real do-it-yourselfers. That is one of the things I love about Maine. Yes, it is easy to just call the plumber, or to go to Lowes and buy a prebuilt chicken coop. That gives us the time to watch maybe a rerun of some inane tv show and it's commercials, yay!, but what are we losing in the process? And, yes, it's easy to go to a temple, a church, or a monastery and be told now we pray and this is what we pray, and now we meditate and this is how you must do it. But when you leave that temple what are you taking with you and what have you left there on the altar? When I first began living in the monastery I learned quite a bit and my spiritual faith and understanding was deepened and broadened. It is good to have guides and teacher and Gurus, and it is good to be put in new situations. But then, over time, cloistered monastic life actually began to stifle my spiritual growth for no other reason than there was no room, no allowance for me to explore and do on my own. I think many religious organizations are this way. They offer us something good, they push us and help us to grow. And then, they demand our unthinking loyalty and obedience. And that's when, if we allow it, the "professionals" take over and we lose our lives. Good friends of mine bought some property in Houlton over 40 years ago. They intended to build a giant 2 story house on it, by hand, even though the most they had ever built was a small 10x10 shed. But then the professionals came in, looked things over, and explained to them why a house could never be built in that location and on that soil. My friend and her husband were devastated. They had sunk all their money into this dream only to find out it was impossible and forbidden. Luckily for them they ran into an old man drinking coffee in a diner. This is Maine, after all, and old men in diners handing out advice is pretty much the norm. The old man laughed at their tears and said "whelp, you COULD build'er anyway." What an insane idea! So, that's what my friends did. and the house, which has stood now the many tests of time, is one of the most magical places to be. It is well loved, well lived in and despite the professionals, still standing. So anyway, Glen Ard needed a chicken coop. The chickens had been living in a 4x4 box of sorts, and it was time to do right by them. College had closed for the summer and so, with plenty of time but no money I set about building an inexpensive yet awesome chicken coop. I researched via the internet for ideas, and when I saw cementitiousman's coop I knew that was the style that we needed here at Glen Ard. (here is a link to cementitiousman's coop- I also obtained the book Cordwood Masonry Housebuilding by Rob Roy. This book is awesome and very well written. It is a real step by step how to with all the "why?"s answered. If you are interested in cordwood building, this is the book to read. From there I just took a deep breath and began... slowly... letting myself learn as I went. After a while one begins to realize - oh this is the right wetness for the mortar, oh this is the better way to set the logs, and etc. Mistakes were made. Many many mistakes. And yet, we now not only have an awesome 11' diameter, 5 foot high `chicken coop (which cost less than $300) but I have gained new skills and new understandings of my world and myself. Let's face it. This is a crazy messed up world. And you can call in a professional and have it done "right." Or, you can get your hands dirty and get your nose and your pride bloodied and do it yourself. In other words, do you want to live your life or do you want to let someone else do it for you? I knew an old Zen abbot who used to scream "Zen is NOT a spectator sport!!!" and he was right. And neither is your life a spectator sport. Live it.
