On April 7th Austin's 4th Annual Funky Chicken Coop Tour will offer visitors the opportunity to show their kids where eggs come from, view new chicken coop designs and have an opportunity to "talk chicken" with other poultry enthusiasts. The tour hosts will be on hand to share their experiences with chicken care, maintaining harmony among the chickens, people and pets, and much more. The tour highlights the diversity of chickens and their coops. Austin's chicken coops are often integrated into organic gardens and educational, sustainability and permaculture projects. The Funky Chicken Coop Tour??, founded in 2009, is an annual self guided tour held each spring in Austin, Texas, by the nonprofit organization the Urban Poultry Association of Texas, Inc. This tour encourages Austin residents to raise chickens in their own backyards by demonstrating the many ways that chicken habitats can be incorporated into an urban residence without violating city ordinances or creating a nuisance. Austin is just one of 300 North American cities that allow backyard chickens, with more cities overturning ordinances banning chickens each year. Why the shift in support of urban chickens?
