Chicken Coop Heater - Chicken Coop Ideas This article will be looking at the various options for a chicken coop heater and the basics of chicken coops and runs in general. Raising chickens has become very popular in the last couple of decades even in built up, urban areas. Personally I think this is down to the 'green' element of chicken coops - it's a very nature loving and natural pass-time and it also has the added benefit of lovely organic eggs. Now why do we need a chicken coop heater and are they really that important? You need to keep the birds warm in the winter - especially where I live ( South Wales UK - very cold and wet winter months ). So what are the options of chicken coop heater? What about a portable heater? These come in both electric and gas but personally I would go for electric, I don't like the idea of a gas system being near wildlife ( but that's just me personally ). Another popular choice for heating the inside of your chicken coop is to use ceramic heat lamps. If you decide to fit these types of heat sources then you must really make sure that they are not in contact with anything or they are not able to be knocked over. Red heat laps are another option ( but I don't find these to effective in my area ). As an alternative to a chicken coop heater is to build the coop indoors for starters instead of having it out in the open. A lot of people build a coop inside a barn so they have two forms of protection against the elements. As well as building inside a barn you can also add a microwavable 'sleeping disk'. These microwavable pads or disks are now being sold in pet shops of all types - they are meant for most pets and apparently work really well for chicken coops. All these options are viable for a chicken coop heater but the most interesting option I have been given is by a guy I know who runs a large outdoor store in my area. He told me that when it comes to chickens all you need to do is keep the temperature inside the coop above freezing they will not be in any danger. As well as this he told me that food will act as warmth to the birds ( seriously, just food ), in particular he mentioned corn. Whatever chicken coop heater you decide on remember to safely fit them inside the coop to avoid injury to the birds.
