Day 9: City chickens in a coop fit for a czar My mother-in-law told me that when she worked at Fernald in the 1950s, 'City Chicken' appeared as a menu selection in the cafeteria. Employees who were from out of town were perplexed: Why did where the chickens were raised rate a mention on the menu? Of course, folks on the west side know that city chicken isn't chicken at all. It was chunks of pork and veal (now usually just pork) on a wooden skewer. But nowadays, sometimes where a chicken grew up does appear on menus'if it is 'free range.' Which brings me to the photograph, of what is probably the fanciest chicken coop I've ever seen. This coop was home to a few chickens (and one rooster) on the south side of Guerley Road in Price Hill for many years. The vaguely Russian-looking coop had pride of place in the side yard of a house about halfway between Glenway and Rapid Run Park. Yes, you can keep chickens in the city limits of Cincinnati. According to city ordinances, however, you have to have an enclosure for the chickens; they can't be entirely free range. A lot of people opt for a small prefab coop, but the people who built this one were apparently looking for something more upscale. A few years ago, the coop disappeared, then reappeared in the yard of the last house on the north side of the road. I didn't see it move, but I like to think the chickens called Foghorn Leghorn Moving Company, packed up their nests, and moved on down the road. I don't think that actually happened, though; the coop is empty these days. But if the new owners of the somewhat startling structure did want to keep chickens, they would be in good company. Gorman Heritage Farm in Evendale, Park + Vine in Over the Rhine, and even the Civic Garden Center have been offering classes in how to raise backyard chickens for several years now, and people have been flocking to learn. Experts at the Gorman Farm suggest you start with about six chicks (the smallest number you can buy under Ohio state law at the local hatchery in Mt. Healthy). Golden Comets are good egg layers, but other popular urban chicken breeds include Araucanas, Buff Orpingtons, and an Ohio breed called Buckeyes. The chicks cost about $4 apiece, and they eat grass, bugs, and kitchen scraps. You can buy chicken feed for them, but that costs about a $1 a day. There are some general health regulations you must follow, but you can raise chickens on even the smallest lot'and even if you don't have a coop fit for a czar. But before you bring those chicks home, check with your neighbors to make sure they won't mind (especially if one of the chicks is a rooster). The best way to get the neighbors on your side is to offer them fresh eggs'a great way to make them city chicken supporters, too.
